God has called us to the Tarahumara Indians in the Copper Canyon Region of northwestern Mexico.
Tarahumara’s are one of the two known people groups in the entire world without a system of traditional midwifery. All tribal peoples have always had midwives—women who possess the knowledge to guide mothers safely through the birthing process. Somewhere along the way, the Tara’s lost their midwives. The Tara women birth alone and unassisted, suffering and often dying from complications that are easily prevented in the hands of a trained attendant. As well as serving families as attendants at their births, midwives also mentor women in basic health care, infant care, and family nutrition, equipping them to sustain the lives of their children and support the health of their families. In a culture with a 50% childhood mortality rate, this has an extremely significant impact. Additionally, a midwife often becomes a caring and supportive family friend, and a sought out advisor as the children grow. God has called us not only to provide midwifery care to the people of this region, but to train indigenous Tarahumara women to become midwives themselves, and thereby reintroduce midwifery back into their culture.
